Where Have We Been?
My work seeks to create a connection between location and emotion. We are all shaped by the places we have been, both in our waking lives and in our dreams. Our understandings of ourselves, our lives, and our emotions are born from each tree branch, moonrise, and cloud we pass. I am fascinated by the ways in which we are nurtured by the nature that surrounds us. In studying the places I've been, I seek to understand myself.
Artist's Statement continued
I work primarily in oil paints and encaustics. Encaustic is an ancient medium comprised of beeswax, damar resin, and pigment. The heat required to melt and fuse the layers of wax make encaustics a rather unpredictable medium. I find that this unpredictability mimics the uncertain nature of our own development of self. As an encaustic painter, I must allow my work to evolve as it inevitably will. And in turn, my work continues to shape me much like the tree branches, moonrises, and clouds that I encounter at every turn.
